How Much Is a Beer In Iceland (& How To Make It Cheaper!)

If you’re anything like me, I judge a place and how expensive it is by the price of its beer – and Iceland, specifically Reykjavik, is no different.

I visited recently, and it was actually as a present from my significant other – so I was a bit blind sided and couldn’t quite do my research, although I knew it would be fairly expensive being a nordic country. We got there late, checked into our hotel and had a walk down the main road, soon finding “The English Pub” about half way down. The vibe was fantastic, there was a guitarist playing in the corner, it was busy, so we went up to the bar and ordered two pints of the local beer.

I paid in ISK, checked my phone, and was pretty taken aback by what it was converted to.

Price of a Standard Beer (Draft)

The price of a pint, or rather, large beer is extremely expensive in Iceland.
  • Small Beer (33cl): 1100 – 1300 ISK (£6.58 – £7.78 / €7.67 – €9.07 / $8.87 – $10.48)
  • Large Beer (50cl): 1600 – 1800 ISK (£9.57 – £10.77 /  €11.16 – €12.56 / $12.89 – $14.51)
I guess it’s relative as to where you’ve travelled from, but for me, that’s double the price and a large beer is smaller than a large beer in my country by over 10%.  So after receiving my pint in The English Bar, I hopped straight on Google to try and find a solution.

Is It Cheaper In Shops?

My first thought is, is it way cheaper to buy a beer in a shop? The answer is yes, a small bottle of local beer in the shop will cost you about 380 ISK at the cheaper end (£2.27 / €2.65 / $3.06) but I noticed for the most part they were relatively weak in ABV. But on a side note, it got me thinking, it must be tax. Again after a little bit of research, that turned out to be the reason, it depends on the alcohol percentage as to how much the tax is but for instance the Iceland Mag reports that Vodka can have a staggering 84.4% tax!

How Can I Make It Cheaper?

Large Beer at Bastards Bar, ReykjavikI found the solution, HAPPY HOUR!

That might not sound ideal, but in Iceland “Happy Hour” works a little differently, and it essentially means half priced drinks, and for most bars it’s much longer than an hour.

The good news is that majority of bars have different happy hours, and Reykjavik is pretty small, so getting from one side to the other doesn’t take long.

Let the bar crawl commence.

Although I always try and travel frequently, and I have been to Reykjavik fairly recently things can very quickly become outdated – such as bars changing their happy hours, or closing. If you noticed something is wrong, please contact us and inform us so we can make the changes for future travellers.

There’s also ever chance I’ve missed a bar or two, so let me know!
